What Can Happen to Your AC at the End of Summer

family-before-electric-fansSummer is coming to a close very soon, and your AC unit has been working hard since the Springtime. Don’t you think it’s time to give your HVAC system a little TLC? The heat of summer places a lot of strain on your AC as it tries to cool your indoors to a comfortable temperature despite the outside heat and humidity.

Addressing repair needs now is a great way to keep your unit in peak condition and avoid surprise breakdowns over winter or even next summer. If you’re ready to schedule an air conditioning service in Sugar Land, TX, our team can help. In the meantime, learn why it’s important to invest in end-of-season AC repair services.

Self-Diagnosing AC Problems

The most common flaw in self-diagnosing AC problems is that you don’t do it. Most homeowners ignore the small signs that their AC is in need of repairs. If it’s cooling your home then everything is fine, right? That may not be the case. Ignoring unusual noises, changes in cooling, and increasing energy bills can cost you as time goes on. Addressing problems early can prevent additional damage and win you back some of the lost efficiency. It’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your home’s HVAC system.

Signs of AC Problems

Our team of professionals can offer a maintenance recommendation that will keep your unit running smoothly, and maybe even better than it is now. If you notice any (or all!) of these red flags, then your AC needs a checkup sooner rather than later:

  • Poor airflow – When you hold your hand up to an air vent in your home, you should feel air streaming into the room. If the airflow feels weak, there may be an air leak or blockage somewhere in your system.
  • Less cooling – When you hold your hand up to the air vents, the stream of air you feel should also be cool. If it feels warm, something is definitely wrong. Components can overheat, ductwork can have holes, or you may have a refrigerant leak. Only a professional can troubleshoot and determine why your air is warm instead of cool
  • Short cycling – If your unit turns off and back on again frequently, it’s short cycling. Usually, cooling cycles last around 15 minutes and happen intermittently throughout the day as the inside temperature increases. Hearing your unit turn on and off many times in a row can put a strain on the compressor and lead to serious damage.
  • Unusual sounds – Any sounds that you wouldn’t describe as “white noise” probably indicate that something is wrong. The gentle hum of the compressor is completely normal, and you may even hear a few clicks as the compressor turns on and off during cooling cycles. But banging, booming, and hissing are all warning signs that you shouldn’t ignore.
